Book Club – Pt. 2

21 01 2009

The second book club meeting was last night… and it was a good time. This meeting’s book was Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen, chosen by Kell’s Bells.

This book is categorized as “historical fiction” and is set during the Great Depression in the 1930’s. The main character is Jacob Jankowski, who joins the circus after he leaves veterinary school upon finding out that his parents were killed in a car crash. The story alternates between memories of his time with the circus and the present-day, when Jacob is a 90-year old man living in a nursing home.

I loved this book. I read it on my flights to and from Florida for Christmas. I probably could have finished it on the flight down, but since I was enjoying it, I decided to take it a little slower than normal.

We had a good discussion about the book and it seems everyone to have liked it. It was a very intriguing story, and we all agreed that the author did a great job writing from a man’s point of view.

There are many mentions in the book to the Ringling Circus. I’ve mentioned it here before, but I’ve been to the Ringling Circus Museum in Sarasota, Florida. It was really interesting and if you’re ever near there, I highly suggest that you check it out… Where else can you find a teeny, tiny replica of the circus in its entirety?

Before we left, we found out our next book… Under the Banner of Heaven by Jon Krakauer. This should be interesting.
