No Cornbread…

6 03 2011

This evening, I went to see the Carolina Chocolate Drops for the second time, along with two lady friends I met through Twitter. UncleCrappy and MrsCrappy couldn’t make this one.

We met for dinner at Buffalo Blues, and then went for a drink at Kelly’s (my FIRST time there! and I had an AWFUL Mint Julep) before the show at the Kelly Strayhorn Theater in East Liberty.

We walked in to find an first-come, first-seated arrangement. And I spotted three seats together, on the aisle, about four rows back from the stage. We grabbed them. (Grand seats, considering UncleCrappy and I watched from the absolute back of the venue last time and could hardly see the stage!)

The show was part of an event the Strayhorn puts on called the Sunstar Music Festival. A four-day event that showcases woman music-makers, thus why the ticket was $25. The musicians and performers before the Drops were also awesome.

Back to THE show…

I noticed four chairs set up. Last time there were three. Hmmm… And when the Drops walked out, I noticed not one new person, but two. Turns out Justin started grad school and left the band. (Good for you Justin!) Now they have a new guy named Hubby, who also plays a mandolin! And then I saw a random white dude in the 4th chair… His name, I believe, is Adam. Who, after holding a tambourine,  seemed to be playing an imaginary stand up bass. I was so confused.

But, Holy Cow. If I wasn’t working Sunday night, I’d so be going to see Adam’s solo show at Garfield Art Works. But I am working. So anyway, his ability to beat-box, and to mimic (is that the right word? I have no clue!) a slide trombone and trumpet are amazing. I was seriously impressed. He even mimicked the sound of brushes on a drum and cymbals during one song. No, really.  I hope they keep him around. I have no idea what he does in his solo show, as my attempt to load the Garfield Art Works website failed… And I don’t know his last name.

Dom was crazy and dancing through part of the show, even tossing around his guitar at one point. He’s a showman, that one. I love it.

The show was awesome, as I expected. They played some things I haven’t heard before, and couldn’t find on You Tube. Sad. But, they played some faves, including some of mine, like Snowden’s Jig and Hit ‘Em Up Style… But they didn’t play some things I adored last time and that are on regular rotation on my iTunes. Namely, Cornbread and Butterbeans. That song is one I tell newbies to check out! I wasn’t surprised, when I saw Hubby, that they didn’t play it… That was Justin’s song, so when Rhiannon explained why they weren’t playing it, I totally understood. They also didn’t play Salty Dog, which I also like.

I watched Dom play the harmonica for an entire song (including with his nose! I know!) and he flipped it back and forth on his mouth, and never missed a beat. ZOMG.

But overall? It was totally worth the $25 and I’ll definitely see them next time they are in town. Absolutely.

I hope that my ladies that were with me tonight will be there, same with UncleCrappy and MrsCrappy… Oh, And you TOO AndreaDisaster! We missed you all!

Happy soul.

16 02 2011

Realizing that your soul is happy because of something you did? It’s an amazing feeling.

I felt it Saturday night. After we finished up and packed away Chachiplays. I realized, instead of what I did years ago – meeting friends at a bar, having a few drinks and chatting – my friends and I spent all of, or the better part of, 24 hours helping my friend play video games, and raising money for Make Room For Kids. My soul and my person were made whole and so happy. Really.

Granted, we went to a bar/restaurant after the event and most of us ate like we had never had food before (okay, just me and my French Onion Soup and amazing chevre salad.)

But really… when I got home? I felt so fulfilled. And I keep telling people about Chachiplays. Some are mad I didn’t tell them earlier. (Sorry!)

And others watched my hour of rugby with Chachi and then donated $50. Also, they texted me to ask  about the “dirty bunny” and I corrected them and explained it was the ScareHouse Bunny, whom I hope I am now friends with? Maybe?

And then I heard about how my laugh is apparently contagious and people love it… (I’ve heard that a lot lately. My laugh. Contagious.)  I’m so confused by that, but, I love that my co-worker donated…  she’s an awesome presence at My Living Room. And that her boyfriend heard my loud laughter rooms away from where she was? And knew it was me, and it made him laugh? Makes me smile like crazy. Apparently more contagious laughter. IDK.

I loved helping Chachi. LOVED. And I can’t wait till next year… I already volunteered.

But what makes this even more worth my soul being happy?

Chachi is going to be recognized by the city for his event. WOWZA.

See this link to learn more.

I cannot be more proud of my friend, Chachi. He did a great thing. I will be there on March 1st at 10am. To see my amazing friend accept this amazing honor.

This makes me and my soul so happy. SO HAPPY.

I love that Chachi is one of my best friends. As are the peeps that helped him. Missy, Mike and Matt. I love you guys. I am honestly honored to have been a part of this. Thanks. You are all amazing. I’m blessed.

Plunge?

30 12 2010

I’m totally in a conundrum here…

Do I want to go back and do the plunge this year? I was there in 2009. Missed 2010 because I’m a moron. (big surprise.)

I don’t miss that “Holy crap was that cold!” thing… but I do love the idea of it.

The Nana hates that I consider it, even now, but Lili thinks it’s awesome.

Anywho… The Yinz Polar Bear Plungers, are again returning to our original post-plunge home, My Living Room, this year.

This makes me so happy. Even if I don’t jump in the river. I’m happy that my friends love My Living Room as much as I do and know we have good food and good employees, and want to spend their time there.

I asked again, same as last time, for special permission to open early and I was given the okay. But that was for me to open and tend bar… I still needed someone to cook.

And my buddy Rook has agreed to show up hours early to cook while I bartend.

I cannot tell you how happy I am that my friends want to come to My Living Room that early on New Year’s Day. I cannot tell you how happy I am that Rook agreed to show up early and cook for my friends.

What I can tell you is that I can’t wait for New Year’s Day and the opportunity to see and tend bar for my good friends. I cannot wait for it.

I’m so happy to be able to bring the Yinz Polar Plunge group back to My Living Room.

Thank you, friends, for supporting me, and for again supporting My Living Room. You know I love it there, and that I love you all. So, thanks. It means a lot to me that you asked for this, and I’m so happy I could make it happen. I can’t wait for New Year’s Day!!

Alive & well!!

9 11 2010

I’m totally alive & well.

Worky-worky is messing with my blog posting.

I don’t care. I’m sooooooooooooooo happy to be at My Living Room working. I said before, I LOVE the people that work there right now.

I’m so, so happy.

So. Happy.

And now I don’t work till next Sunday.

But I have HO1KB to look forward to on Wednesday night. I can’t wait!!

And the Angels at Nationals. I’d be nervous, but I know this team, and they will do it. They will bring me home a National Championship thingamagig (trophy or plaque.) And I, yes I, will hang it on the wall of My Living Room (for no reason other than I couldn’t play or go) and be oh. so. proud.

And then I will go see my Little C and fam for Turkey Day and the family photo opp.

I haven’t talked about this here, but my Lili & NE hired this kick-ass casual photographer for the day after Turkey Day. To take multiple family photos.

The picture of The Nana, The GrandPa, Lili, NE, Little C and I, will be the most epic picture I’ve ever seen. I guarantee it. I cannot wait. Cannot. Wait.

I also had a dream, where I foresee a picture of me and my Little C being redonkulous. (New word, world, learn it. It’s me and my C. We’re allowed.)

And I will cherish that picture and every single one this photog takes like my life depends on it. (I’m sappy like that. Learn it. Deal with it.)

I can’t wait for family picture time. I cannot wait. Me, Lili and Little C? We’re gonna make this a party that everyone wishes they attended. True story.

Ready. Sort of.

1 10 2010

I’m ready for my busy day tomorrow.

Knowing that I’m old and stuff, I am at home tonight, getting ready for a good night’s sleep. Because working from 6pm till close is something I gave up over a year and a half ago.

It’s gonna be rough. But I’m ready to show up with a smile, and wear whatever the heck I can manage to fit the dress code. I know I own approximately 30,000 PRFC and Living Room shirts. Can I find one? NO! Are there any smalls in the PRFC goodie bags? No. Guess I’m buying a new t-shirt tomorrow.

(Which I will mod in my own time before the next shift.)

I swear on everything I love, I WILL be pleasant tomorrow night. I will be a new-to-you bartender.

But, first, I’m getting up and going to tailgate with the master of tailgating, Uncle Crappy, before we watch Burghseyeview‘s son play football against CMU.

Said son is also a rugger, so I gotta be there. Yes, I’m skipping a home Angels game to attend this. But I’ll see my ladies later.

I’ll peace out and head to work… Yes, I just said that. I am going to work…. At My Living Room.

You have no idea how much this freaks me out.

I’m going to work. I have, if only for one night, a job. Good grief.

I am a bartender again.

God, I hope I remember how to do this.

By the way, friends who are planning to be there to support me? You have no idea how much I appreciate you. I hope to be able to hug or talk to every single one of you, if I can’t, please understand I’ve gotta do this job, but I love that you guys are going to be there for me. Even more than I appreciated your showing up when I left My Living Room.

Luckiest girl on the planet to have the friends I have. True Story.

I have to be at work (that is SO STRANGE TO SAY) by 6pm. I want dinner before I work. So I’ll be there earlier.

Things have changed there. I hope I’m quick enough to get it.

Pretty sure I will get it, and I will be better for it.

Can’t wait to see everyone at My Living Room tomorrow.

Ah, My Living Room. This is going to be EPIC.

Podcamp!!!

17 09 2010

It’s tomorrow! And I’m going! Yays!

And tonight was the meet & greet. Great time. Wonderful friends.

Do you all remember when I was shy and awkward, and made Calipanthergrl go to my first event with me? Because I was painfully SHY? And I think the only person I spoke to was Jennie… and CPG. I am such a dork!!

Never in my wildest dreams back then, did I imagine that I would now know so many people and could introduce two of my friends to so many people tonight. It made me so happy that I know all of these people. I’m so lucky. So. Lucky.

Twitter and the online community rocks, you guys. Most ruggers joke around with me about “twetting” things that happen, but the Tweeps I have rock, and tonight was another reminder. An un-needed one, but still, I loved it.

And to all of you who complimented me on my appearance tonight, thank you, again. I like to surprise you guys every once in a while and show up all fancy, just so you don’t think I’m always in rugby or softball or grungy stuff all the time. But really, thank you. I appreciate the compliments more than I can tell you. Again, my TWEEPS ROCK!

I cannot wait for tomorrow!

(PS: For The Nana and Lili: I wore the fancy, strappy shoes this evening. They were gloriously comfy. Not kidding. I was standing/walking all night long!! I was entirely correct when I saw them in the mirror and fell in love… I think they love me back!)

Brewfest & rugby practice.

20 08 2010

Brewfest. It’s on. December 3rd. OMG

So much work to do.

And today? A distributor guy who totally rocks my Brewfest with double digit numbers of brewers every year sent me a spreadsheet of the beers they represent. Not just one spreadsheet. But a 6-tab spreadsheet. My Netbook cried out loud! when I tried to view the beer list.

Oh, and even better? He said, “We will take as many tables as we can for the
event.”

Um, hi, I love you. Especially after not being able to really see the 6-tab spreadsheet. Good grief.

I gotta print those suckers out to take on my “vacation” to Florida as “required reading.”

Required reading. On my vacation. Yep.

Also on the “required” list, and before that reading thingy? JOB.

I went to rugby tonight. To be a “body.” The Angels numbers are craptastic. I would love to know why… We’re awesome… But I don’t have insurance, so I can’t do much.

But, I scrummed at prop with the scrum machine. (Since I’m a 1-15 player!) And whoooo buddy! Is it fun to be a stand-in prop, and have those second rows hit you? WOW. Good gravy those girls propel you far. I kinda-sorta wish I was bigger and could play prop. Or second row… Dreams, we all have them… Although the “squeeze and drive” part was a bit difficult to get used to at prop. 2nd row? Got it. Flanker? Got it. 8-man? Got it. Prop & hooker screw me up.

And then I somehow got talked into being a jumper in line outs to help the lifters, leftover sunscreen covering my legs, and yeah… we’re now not lifting just via shorts. We’re lifting from the knees. (Also, when I started playing rugby? You could NOT lift… I’m old.) So every time KB or the other lovely ladies tried to lift me? Their hands slipped. Much. I nearly collapsed, 3-4 feet in the air onto KellsBells. I don’t wanna kill my KellsBells!!!

But we managed. Then I fielded kicks and other stuff and talked to the boys about the Brewfest and Name that Brewfest Beer (I have 62 submissions & I’ll talk about that later before my hug-The Nana-till-she-kills-me trip to Florida) Sorry, The Nana, you’re about to get elebenty hugs a day, and we’re going to do a felt food experiment… Surprise!!!!)

Yeah, my life is kinda full. But I’d rather have a jobby job…. And do the rest at home.

In closing, fave line out call, by Birthday Girl tonight: “Claire’s so tan. 28.”

Most of that will be lost on you regulars, but I’ll ‘splain it to you if you ask…

Text me if you need me on my vacation. Cuz I’m all about my family while I’m gone. They’re super amazing and “get” the rugby stuff, but I’m going to try to leave my Netbook and phone at the house. A. Lot. I NEED my family right now.
